Victoria Houston

I have just finished reading Willa Cather’s My Antonia.

My favorites are certain Scandinavian mystery writers:  Sjowall & Wahloo (The Martin Beck Detective Series) and Henning Mankell (Kurt Wallender detective series).

I like older fiction authors such as Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Truman Capote. I like some biographies like Walter Isaakson’s bio of Steve Jobs and David McCullough on Harry Truman.

Also Shirley Jackson, Evan Connell and Joan Didion

My least favorite – are sci-fi, fantasy and contemporary fiction. I also don’t care for much current crime fiction as it is too psychological.

Don’t get married too soon. Find the work you have a passion for first. That will last, marriage may not.

Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem and Willa Cather’s My Antonia and O Pioneers! And I constantly read Mary Oliver’s poetry.

Too many adverbs and adjectives.  Keep it “Simple & Direct” (another favorite book – one I live by.)

Victoria Houston is the author of 22 mystery novels and 7 non-fiction books. (See website:  victoriahouston.com for list).  She has worked in Public Relations in the Newspaper and Book Publishing industries as well as General Public Relations.
