I don’t pay attention to trends in literature, but what I always love is when you can tell an author took a real risk on the page. I don’t even need that risk to “work” in order to appreciate it, I just want to read things that surprise me and make me think.

Never play it safe, especially when writing about yourself. I like the E.M. Cioran quote: “Write books only if you are going to say in them the things you would never dare confide to anyone.” Also, don’t wait for inspiration to hit before writing—learn to write regardless of how you feel.
