April Genevieve Tucholke.

My top 3:

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell [by Susanna Clarke], The Night Circus [by Erin Morgenstern], and Circe [by Madeline Miller].

Some of the best money I spent was on traveling to Scotland. I graduated with a BA in creative writing, but I didn’t start writing seriously until years later, when I was living in Edinburgh. I found that wild country deeply inspiring, and it helped me write my first book.

These are just my personal preferences:

Favorite trend: anything magical, fantastical, or historical (preferably all three)

Least favorite trend: anything hyper-realistic

Spending time trying to build a social media platform instead of writing. Some of the most successful authors I know aren’t on social media at all (or have very few followers).

I’m reading so many things!

Books: The Ten Thousand Doors of January [by Alix E. Harrow], The House in the Cerulean Sea [by TJ Klune], The Name of the Rose [by Umberto Eco], The War of Art [by Steven Pressfield]

Audiobooks: The Witch’s Heart [by Genevieve Gornichec], The Song of Achilles [by Madeline Miller], Lirael [by Garth Nix]

April Genevieve Tucholke is the author of Clandestine (Workman 2023), The Boneless Mercies (FSG), and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Penguin), among others. Her books have been published in sixteen countries, and have received ten starred reviews. Tucholke lives in Savannah, Georgia. She loves coffee, forests, and Gothic cities.
